1. A Simple Plan

A simple plan is a 1998 movie about three friends who discover the wreckage of a plane. In the wreckage they find a suitcase full of millions of dollars and they decide to split it three ways evenly.
Lady Macbeth would love this movie because she would see herself in the female character. She doesn't want her husband to miss out on any of the riches and decides to take matters into her own hands much like Lady Macbeth. She would appreciate this movie.
2. House of Cards

House of Cards is Netflix original series about a husband and wife duo who seek revenge on people who have betrayed him. Lady Macbeth would also see herself in the main female character, Claire Underwood, in this show. Claire is power hungry just like Lady Macbeth, and will do just about anything to help her husband gain the power she feels he is entitled to. Lady Macbeth would appreciate Claire's scheming ways.
3. Frozen
Frozen is a Disney movie about a young queen with crazy awesome winter powers. The queen, Elsa is somewhat like Lady Macbeth in that they are both strong female figures without children.
4. Scandal

Scandal is about a team of lawyers who try to make scandals go away...among other things. Macbeth is one huge scandal. Lady Macbeth and Olivia Pope are very similar in that both will do anything to get what they want. Olivia Pope makes a living by making scandals disappear.... Lady Macbeth did a good bit of that when helping her husband cover up murder.
Great comparisons between Lady Macbeth and the females in the movies/shows you picked! I think what is really interesting is that although Lady Macbeth and the other characters are similar due to their power and schemes, they were looked at differently because of the societal views in the time periods they were created in. When Lady Macbeth was introduced by Shakespeare, the people probably thought that it was unusual that she could gain so much power and influence over her husband. Compare that to today when strong female characters are very common and familiar to us. Usually we look up to them now, so it’s interesting to notice that massive change in society through the years. I also liked your connection to Frozen because it shows that power is not necessarily a bad thing, which is portrayed through Elsa.
ReplyDeleteI did Lady Macbeth and I also chose Scandal! I think a little more summary of the selected shows and movies would help the audience to draw more concrete connections. Frozen was a totally unexpected choice and I appreciate that you looked at something unconventional such as a children's movie to talk about Lady Macbeth.
